Starving dogs survived on owners' remains

So... the Saskatoon SPCA found 7 dogs alive after the elderly pet owners had died in their home for 2~3 weeks. The police later found out that the dogs were able to stay alive by eating the remains of their owners!! (When I found out 5 of the dogs are Shelties, I was like... ewwwwww.....).

The Saskatoon SPCA now has to determine if the dogs can be adopted or need to be put down (which is sad because the dogs were just acting out of their survival instincts).

I seriously hope they can help these dogs find new homes. I know this may sound all gross and weird, but I rather be dog food than maggot food...

Dog shows up in CA 1.5 years after running away in CO

This adventurous dog (Buster Brown) somehow traveled from Colorado to San Francisco (1,300 miles from home), then showed up 1.5 yrs later at the Salinas Animal Shelter!

Buster Brown looks pretty healthy from the video, so I'm guessing he's got some amazing survival skills! (Wouldn't it be so awesome if there was a video camera on him this whole time?) Well, Buster Brown will be on a flight back home later this week to be reunited with his owner.

ASPCA to provid grant to the Joplin Humane Society in Joplin, MO

The $100K grant will support disaster relief and recovery efforts following the May 22 tornado that killed 130 people and displaced some 850 animals.

Tornado Dog Crawls Home with Two Shattered Legs...

I don't know how I feel about this story...

A dog (Mason) who was carried away by a killer Alabama tornado in late April had such a will to make it home that he crawled back to his house with two shattered front legs. It took the terrier mix more than two weeks to get there (I cried....).

Well, Mason's owners were shocked to see him on the front porch of their home, they thought that he'd be dead by now. So, with all the distress Mason’s owners had been through themselves because of the tornado, they sent Mason to the local animal shelter because they couldn't deal with the expensive medical care Mason would need. (I totally understand the stress they've been through, but I also can't imaging giving up my injured dog after finding him on my front porch. I'm not judging... it's been beyond terrible for people affected by tornadoes.)

Fortunately Mason is being well cared for at the Birmingham-Jefferson County Animal Control shelter, and at the Vulcan Park Animal Care Clinic.

“This is probably the most dramatic we’ve seen as far as an injury in an animal that’s survived this long,” said the shelter’s Phil Doster. “For an animal to go through what he’s gone through and not to be ugly, to be happy for any companionship is remarkable. We’re honored to be part of his recovery.”

The pig ear supplier, Keys Manufacturing, issued a recall this month after a dog in Missouri was reported sick.

Pets with salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may show only a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

Products recalled:

The Boss Pets Products recall includes Diggers Natural Treat Pig Ear pet treats, which were distributed from November, 2010 through April, 2011 in Montana, California, Washington, Oklahoma, Tennessee, New York, Kansas, Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Oregon, Utah, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, and Minnesota. The treats were sold in bulk in boxes of 100 (UPC 0-72929-00038-6); shrink wrapped in boxes of 50 (UPC 0-72929-99120-2); in two-pack bags shipped in cases of 12 bags (UPC 0-72929-99504-0); four-pack bags shipped in cases of 12 bags (UPC 0-72929-00227-4) and eight-pack bags shipped in cases of 12 bags (UPC 0-72929-99584-2).

CVM Updates FDA Issues Caution to Pet Owners with the Use of an Unapproved Pet Shampoo Product

The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine is alerting pet owners to use caution with the use of an unapproved animal drug product, Douxo Seborrhea Shampoo (0.1% phytosphingosine), distributed by Sogeval Laboratories, Inc. of Coppell, Texas after recently receiving a report of the death of a woman associated with the use of the product on her dog.

The March adverse event report describes a woman with severe, preexisting asthma who had a sudden, severe asthma attack and died while bathing a dog using the product, Douxo Seborrhea Shampoo. A few days later, another asthmatic family member bathed the dog using the same product and experienced a mild asthma attack but recovered.

FDA is advising consumers with asthma or other respiratory conditions to consider consulting with their physicians prior to use of this product.
FDA is currently investigating this serious issue and will provide additional information as appropriate.

"Big Splash," or "Hong Dong" in Chinese

Tibetan Mastiffs are huge and fierce guard dogs that have stood watch over nomad camps and monasteries on the Tibetan plateau for centuries.

They are thought to be one of the world's oldest breeds, and legend has it that both Genghis Khan and Lord Buddha kept them.

More recently, however, they have become highly-prized status symbols for China's new rich. The dogs are thought to be a pure "Chinese" breed and they are rarely found outside Tibet, giving them an exclusivity that other breeds cannot match.

Accordingly, prices have risen from around 5,000 yuan a puppy five years ago to the hundreds of thousands and even millions.

Big Splash, or "Hong Dong" in Chinese, is 11-months-old but already stands nearly three-feet-high at the shoulder and weighs more than 180lbs, according to his breeder, Lu Liang.

Here are some helpful tips from Petplaces.com on how you can guard your pet from abduction:

Don’t leave your dog outside when you’re not around.
Never leave your dog unattended. It takes only a moment for someone to untie him and lead him off.
Be aware, and make sure your neighbors are aware, of the problem of pet theft.
Never allow your dog to roam free in the neighborhood, for everyone’s sake.
Never leave your dog unattended in a car.
Always make sure he wears a collar with ID tags. You might want to consider implanting a microchip under his skin.
Keep recent photos of your dog, taken from different angles that clearly show coat type and coloring, close-ups of the face and any exceptional physical characteristics.
Keep all your proof-of-ownership papers (adoption, breeding contract, bill of sale) in one place to prove ownership.

While recent laboratory testing found that most lots of Wellness canned cat food that were tested contain sufficient amounts of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1), some of the lots listed below might contain less than adequate levels of thiamine. However, out of an abundance of caution, WellPet has decided to recall all of the lots listed below.
Cats fed only the affected lots for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. What's for dinner? Stuffed Mushrooms!

Since we're having Spaghetti with Meatballs at home tonight, I thought I'd use the extra ground meat to make Mickey some Stuffed Mushrooms for dinner.

Here's our yummy recipe (Mickey approved). This meal actually only took me 5 min. to prepare so it's quite simple, if you already have the ingredients handy. (Please adjust portion size according to your pet's body weight).

Mix stuffing ingredients - ground organic chicken (or other meat of your choice), parsley, spinach, carrots, and peas in a stainless steel bowl (I usually buy the frozen veggies, it's a lot easier and still nutritious).
Using a little spoon, fill each mushroom cap (washed and stems removed) with the mixed stuffing.
Place some Bonito flakes on top of each stuffed mushroom (it adds a lot of natural flavors to the meal), then place them in the 350 degrees F preheated oven.
Bake for 15~20 minutes, or till the stuffing is fully cooked.
Make sure to let the food fully cool down (hot food can cause upset stomach).

When ready to serve - I topped each stuffed mushroom with some organic low-fat cottage cheese (optional), sprinkled some parsley, and drizzled some cod liver oil.

Voila! Dinner is ready :)

For some reason, Pugs HATE getting their toenails clipped, & Roxy was no exception.

Back in the days, it would take me around 20 minutes to clip Roxy's nails. She would freak out just from me touching her paws! Now look at little Roxy, she's all relaxed and does not think it's a big deal anymore. (Nail clipping shouldn't be a big deal)!

So I Thought I would share some nail clipping tips for those of you who have dogs that dislike this little grooming process...

Be calm: Be relaxed when approaching your dog, don't make nail clipping a big deal. Have a random conversation with your dog. Talk to your dog about the stock market or something irrelevant, it'll keep him/her focused on what you're trying to say.
Positioning: Make sure your dog is comfortable before beginning. (Avoid putting their paws in awkward or unnatural positions).
Practice: Start by clipping one nail a day if your dog is freaked out about the whole nail clipping process. Don't rush, eventually it will become a normal routine for them.
Reward Your Dog: Praise your dog for being a good sport! Be excited for his/her accomplishment! Dogs love special attention.
Make it a routine: Check the nails at least 2x a month, and make this a routine.

Oakland animal care officers were struggling this week to find homes for dozens of pit bulls rescued in one of the largest animal cruelty busts in decades.
"It was horrific, absolutely terrible," said Oakland police Officer Sarah Whitmeyer, who helped lead the raid on a squalid East Oakland home. "The smell was so bad even a mask didn't help. All of us were coughing and trying to breathe."

What?! Does this mean I can't snuggle with my dog in bed anymore? Most of the pet owners I know sleep in the same bed with their pets!

A study to be published in next month's issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Emerging Infectious Diseases says that sleeping with your pets increases the chances of contracting anything from parasites to the plague.

The experts in zoonoses (diseases or infections transmitted from animals to humans) reported:

"The risk for transmission of zoonotic agents by close contact between pets and their owners through bed sharing, kissing or licking is real and has even been documented for life-threatening infections such as plague [and] internal parasites."

"We wanted to raise the attention of people, as sleeping with a pet is becoming quite common, and there are risks associated with it, even if it is not very frequent, but when it occurs, especially in children or immunocompromised people, it can be very severe."

The study also shows that disease from cats is far more prevalent, and often more serious.

Some examples:

Cat scratch disease - is known to infect 20,000 people each year and is caused by a simple scratch or bite from a cat who has infected fleas or flea feces (gross) on them. The pathogen can cause swelling of the lymph nodes and sometime lethal damage to the liver, kidney and spleen of humans.
A 9-year-old boy from Arizona got the plague because he slept with his flea-infested cat.
A 48-year-old man and his wife repeatedly contracted MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), which their physicians eventually attributed to their dog. The animal "routinely slept in their bed and frequently licked their face," the California experts reported.

Scarrry... Apparently a Japanese woman even contacted meningitis after kissing her pet's face!

Make sure to take your pets in for regular checkups & don't forget about flea preventative treatments all year long!

So I feed my dog a variety of foods (a balanced diet). I usually (95% of the time) cook for him after work everyday. There are a lot of quality pet foods out there these days, but I prefer cooking for him because it's something he looks forward to after a long day at the store. Mickey sits by my feet in the kitchen and stares at me with those, "I LOVE YOU MOM", eyes!! He has me well trained....

So if you want to give your dog a special reward tonight, here's a simple recipe (please adjust portion size according to body weight).

1 serving of the Sojos Grain-Free Dog Food Mix
1 serving of fresh organic raw beef tenderloin from your local market (cut in small cubes)
Some chopped fresh parsley (a nutritious herb, also for good doggie breath!)
A pump of salmon oil (excellent for skin and coat + sparkly eyes)
1 serving of bee pollen (a nutritious supplement with 22 essential amino acids)
Top it off with just a little shaved organic cheddar cheese

I do play around with different supplements all the time, so you can always adjust your recipe according to your pet's needs.

Winter precautions for pets

Happy holidays!! So much to do before Xmas & New Year... we haven't had much time to post anything on the site. Thought I remind everyone these common winter precautions for pets! Trust me, it's not fun to be at the emergency vet's office during the holidays! (Mickey got into a bag of macadamia nuts when he was a puppy... I no longer eat macadamia nuts after that horrible incident!)

Holiday Items

Tinsel/Ribbon – can be ingested and cause serious gastrointestinal trauma.
Christmas tree water (with additives) – can cause stomach upset.
Bubble lights – contain methylene chloride which can be harmful if swallowed as a liquid or inhaled as a vapor.
Lights/electrical cords – cats, kittens & puppies may bite cords causing electrocution.
Glass/Plastic ornaments – can cause serious gastrointestinal trauma.

Winter Items

Antifreeze – even a small amount (1 tablespoon) can be fatal to a small pet.
Rodenticide – should not be used in a home with pets or small children.
Ice Melts – can cause ulceration if left on the skin or feet. Can also cause serious gastrointestinal trauma if ingested.

Food Items

Alcohol – can be toxic to pets causing breathing problems & depression.
Chocolate – dark and/or bakers chocolate is more harmful in smaller doses than milk chocolate. All chocolate should be kept away from pets.
Human Food – is too rich for pets, and while it’s tempting to share over the holidays, it’s best to keep your pet on his/her normal diet.
Macadamia Nuts – cause difficulty walking, tremors & swollen limbs.
Yeast dough – if enough is ingested before it has risen fully or cooked, it will continue to rise causing serious gastrointestinal distress.

Plants

Holly Berries – can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested in large quantities.
Mistletoe – can be very toxic to pets if ingested.
Pointsettias – are not as toxic as once believed, but can cause stomach upset.
Lillies – even in small amounts, can cause serious kidney damage if ingested.
Yew – causes muscle tremors, difficulty walking & has adverse cardiac effects.
Cyclamen – the roots of this plant can cause serious gastrointestinal distress.

If you suspect your pet has been poisoned, you should call your veterinarian or you can call the NAPCC.

The incredible border collie

Chaser, a border collie from South Carolina who knows the names of 1,022 toys! (Oh really? mickey knows the names of his 1,023 toys!) Fine.. Chaser is pretty incredible & smarter than my dog.

6-year-old Chaser spent 3 years working with her psychologist owner John Pilley and Professor Allison Reid to see how many words she could learn. Chaser not only knows words, but also organizes them according to function and shape. (Smart doggie!)

They are still teaching Chaser more words and tests her regularly on the ones she knows.

Dr. Pilley put it like this: "We wanted to see if there was a limit to the number of words a dog could understand, and if they could understand the name of an object rather than just respond to a command related to an object, such as fetch. We’re not saying this means dogs can learn language in the same way children do, but it does show they are capable of learning many more words than might have been thought."

WTH? I was just watching the National Geographic and learned how our domestic cats can transmit Toxoplasma parasite... Makes you think 2x about not cleaning your litter box daily & just tossing the dirty cat litter in the trash bin!

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Toxoplasma is the third leading cause of death attributed to foodborne illness in the United States. More than 60 million men, women, and children in the U.S. carry the Toxoplasma parasite!! Wait, huh? what?!!

How this parasite can be transmitted from an infected cat:

Accidental ingestion of oocysts after cleaning a cat's litter box when the cat has shed Toxoplasma in its feces
Accidental ingestion of oocysts after touching or ingesting anything that has come into contact with a cat's feces that contain Toxoplasma
Accidental ingestion of oocysts in contaminated soil (e.g., not washing hands after gardening or eating unwashed fruits or vegetables from a garden)
Drinking water contaminated with the Toxoplasma parasite

Dog Waits Every Day For Dead Owner ...

This video below breaks my heart! After Wayne Giroux was killed by a drunk driver last June, his faithful dog Spot still waits at the end of the drive-way for him to come home every day.

Similar to the story of Hachiko, a faithful Akita back in 1925 waited for his owner... people would see Hachiko at the same train station everyday for 9 years after his owner passed away!!! O.M.G... *tears*....

On 11/2/10, the majority voted to approve Proposition B (by narrow margin...), also known as the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.

A study done by the Better Business Bureau, "the southwest section of Missouri is the hub of the puppy industry." The Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act states legal guidelines for Missouri dog breeders to maintain humane, small-scale breeding facilities rather than large-scale breeding kennels (puppy mills).

Canine Parvovirus season

I often have to tell customers why we require vaccination records for grooming before we take in new dogs, especially puppies. Just imaging our dogs out and about sniffing and walking through all kinds of wonderful stuff daily, you know they can't bathe themselves everyday! They are exposed to viruses that can be easily prevented with vaccines. A Nor Cal vet recently saw an increase in Parvo. It's almost Halloween (yeah!). I know how most of us love to get all dressed up & eat lots of junk food (hi gym!) on this fun holiday... Here are some important tips from ASPCA as this fun holiday for us maybe a little stressful & sometimes dangerous for our furry babies:

1. No tricks, no treats: That bowl of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. If you do suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

2. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, but they can produce stomach upset in pets who nibble on them.

3. Wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations should be kept out of reach of your pets. If chewed, your pet might suffer cuts or burns, or receive a possibly life-threatening electrical shock.

4. A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.

5. Dress-up can be a big mess-up for some pets. Please don't put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” however, wearing a costume may cause undue stress.

6. If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal's movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe, bark or meow. Also, be sure to try on costumes before the big night. If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting him go au naturale or donning a festive bandana.

7. Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury.

8. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.

9. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn't dart outside.

10. IDs, please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver, increaing the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

In female pets, the symptoms resemble heat: swollen genitals, bloody discharge and behavioral problems. Male animals are showing up with swollen breast tissue and hair loss. Standard treatments and even repeated operations have had no effect.

Now vets have identified the culprit. The pets were all owned by women who used hormone creams on their hands, arms and legs to counter symptoms of menopause. Animals who licked or cuddled their owners, or rubbed up against their legs, were being inadvertently exposed to doses of hormone drugs."

Pessimistic dogs appear to be more prone to engage in unwanted behaviors, such as barking and destruction.
Both behavioral and drug therapies are available to help affected dogs.

Now, a new study reported in the October 12th issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, suggests that this kind of separation anxiety occurs most often in dogs that also show "pessimistic"-like behavior."
